Measuring current leakage from contaminated or fouled distribution insulators is quite easy; the only problem with so many variables involved stray voltage can be very unpredictable and can increase maintenance calls to a point where they become a nuisance.
Telepathx has spent the last three years developing the Pinpoint TPX-TRF RFID line of sensors, they detect EITG (electrically induced thermal generation) on contaminated insulators, not sporadic leakage. A steady flow of current indicates a clear fault in progress
Thermo reactive wireless sensors an industry first
Telepathx Pinpoint sensors are the first non invasive RFID solution for monitoring faulting distribution insulators, they alert you via wireless connection when the thermal threshold has been reached providing energy maintenance personnel exact time and location of fault within seconds
Available in the following protocols

FAQ’s
What types of faults can the Pinpoint sensors detect?
Faults identified include heat build-up from arching, cable degradation, convection heat cavitation steam, corona, current leakage, dielectric heat, eddy current, electrical shorts, failed windings, flashover, flash heat, friction, glow discharge, harmonic distortion, hysteresis, induction heating, lightning strikes, over current, partial arching, partial discharge, plasma, pole fires, pole top fires, resistance heating, radiant heat and surface tracking.
Heat discharge is a by product of just about every known electrical fault, we cant tell you what type of fault your having, but we can tell you when, where and what you are having a problem with before it becomes a bigger problem.
How do energy companies utilize the Telepathx Technology?
Condition based monitoring of the distribution network is all about saturating assets in geographical areas that are prone to specific environmental faults.
Insulators
In Victoria, Western Australia and many coastal areas around the world pole fires are a very big problem that cause tens of thousands of power outages each year. They are caused by a number of contaminants that get deposited on the insulator specific to there geographic location, Salt; coastal areas, Hydro carbons; refineries, industry and dust; agriculture and construction areas.
When the conditions are right, and with a little help from Mother Nature in the form of fog, mist or light rain the contaminants act as a conductive pathway over the insulator and mounting pin to the cross arms.
Where do you install the Pinpoint sensor?
We have developed some very innovative universal attachments that allow the Pinpoint sensors to securely attach to the nut or king bolt pin that holds the insulator to the cross arm. All that is needed is a protruding nut or bolt with a surface area greater than10mm.
How long does it take to install a sensor?
Installing a sensor on an insulator takes only a few seconds, from a bucket truck all phases can be networked in just a few minutes. From the ground using the hot stick adapter takes just a few minutes longer.
Is the sensor water proof?
Yes the Pinpoint sensors are water proof they have an IP rating of 65/66
What is the range of the sensor?
Pinpoint sensors transmit 100-125 meters (over 300 feet) in any direction
What is the life span of the sensor?
The sensor has a small battery installed for transmission purposes that will last anywhere from 10-12 years if not activated. Once activated the sensor will continue transmit and flash its LEDS for approximately three days. Should for any reason the power supply become exhausted before a fault is detected a fail safe identifier will activate, this fail safe mechanism will last for an indefinite period.
